Where do we Stand

  • Most countries are struggling to meet the Goal 6 targets of achieving universal access to treatment for HIV/AIDS by 2010 and of halting and reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015.
  • Access to antiretroviral therapy rose by 42% in 2007 - an unprecedented scaling up.
  • International funding fro anti-HIV/AIDS programs in low and middle income countries reached $10 billion in 2007 - a tenfold increase in less than a decade. Yet, this sum falls short of the $18 billion in assistance required annually to combat AIDS.
  • Progress has been made in malaria control interventions, particularly through the use of insecticide-treated mosquito bed nets, whose production worldwide jumped from 30 million in 2004 to 94 million in 2007. coupled with increased resourced, this has led to a rapid rise in the number of mosquito nets produced and distributed within countries.
