Midwives East Timor Australia aims to purchase a 2nd hand 4WD Toyota Troop-Carrier (needs to be less than 5 years old) to be used as an Ambulance. This ambulance will be tasked with transporting pregnant and labouring women to the Skilled Birth Attendant for labour and birth in a remote district of Timor Leste. The services of the ambulance will help to reduce the very high Maternal and Neonatal Mortality rates present in Timor Leste, as it will increase the number of woman able to have a trained midwife at their birth.
(2) These contain items of clothing for mother & baby (made by Timorese Women) to give them when they birth at a Health Facility - we will purchase these from Alola Foundation in Timor Lesté for approx US$20-$30, and donate them to the Clinic in Dili. These kits include: sarong, t-shirt, towel, soap, re-usable cloth sanitary pads, underwear, toothpaste & toothbrush, baby clothes, bunny rugs, baby change mat, mittens, booties. The maternal and neonatal mortality rate in east Timor is 100 times that of Australia. One of the reasons for such a high level of maternal problems is the low utilisation of skilled assistance for pre-natal care, birth and post-natal care.
Only 10% of pregnant women in East Timor give birth with the assistance of a qualified midwife, others birth alone or with a relative or friend.
74% of infant deaths recorded occured when the child was delivered at home (Health Alliance International)
33 in 1 000 babies will die within thier first month of life (Health Alliance International)
1 in 35 Timorese women will die from pregnancy related complications - many of them preventable. In Australia the rate is 1 in over 35 000 (UNICEF)

Assist in meeting the 2 Millennium Development Goals: Reduce Child Mortality and Improve Maternal Health
Support the Timor Leste Ministry of Health and Non-Government Organisations to reduce the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality rate
